This option makes particular sense when you want marina services, lodging, restaurants and the boat in one general area.
Two Herons Marina — Cutright
Two Herons specializes heavily in pontoons and larger group boats.
Current choices range from an eight-passenger 20-foot pontoon to double-decker and much larger party boats.
If you are organizing a big group, Two Herons is worth comparing before deciding to split everyone into multiple smaller rentals.
Pontoon Rentals
Pontoons are the best all-around motorboat rental for groups whose primary goal is a lake day rather than a specialized sport.

Lake Monroe Boat Rental also offers canoes and kayaks, which makes it easy to choose a human-powered option from the Paynetown area.
Griffy Lake Boathouse
Closer to Bloomington, the city-operated Griffy Lake Boathouse offers seasonal kayaks, canoes and paddleboards.
Griffy allows private non-motorized boats and electric trolling motors subject to its current launch-permit rules. Swimming is prohibited.
Choose Griffy when you want a smaller paddling environment. Choose Monroe Lake when a larger open-water experience is the point.
Tubing Near Bloomington
Tubing has two very different meanings around Bloomington.
Salt Creek Float Tubing
If you want to sit in an inner tube and let moving water carry you, Crimson Canoes operates a relaxed Salt Creek float.
Guests meet at People’s Park in downtown Bloomington, ride the Crimson Bus approximately 20–25 minutes to the creek and spend about three to four hours physically floating.
The tube, life jacket and transportation back to downtown Bloomington are included. Cooler tubes and JBL speakers are optional rentals.
The experience is designed as lazy-river-style recreation rather than whitewater. Current, water level and actual trip time change with conditions.
Boat-Based Tubing on Monroe Lake
If you mean being pulled behind a powerboat, Monroe Lake is the relevant option.
Lake Monroe Boat Rental currently offers tubes among its watersports accessories, along with ski boats.
These two types of tubing are not interchangeable. A Salt Creek float is low-effort, current-driven recreation. Tow tubing is part of a motorboat day.
Swimming and Beach Options
Monroe Lake
Paynetown and Fairfax State Recreation Areas have designated DNR-managed beaches.
Hardin Ridge Recreation Area, operated through Hoosier National Forest, provides another seasonal swimming beach on Monroe Lake.
Before swimming, check current DNR or Forest Service alerts. As of August 2026, DNR’s Paynetown and Fairfax beaches are open but subject to a yellow blue-green-algae advisory. That can change.
Lake Lemon
Riddle Point Park provides a designated public swimming area on Lake Lemon as well as the lake’s public boat launch.
Griffy Lake
Do not plan on swimming at Griffy. City rules prohibit it.
Fishing
Monroe Lake gives anglers the broadest boating-and-fishing combination near Bloomington.
You can bring your own boat or rent a fishing boat from Lake Monroe Boat Rental. DNR publishes current fishing reports and statewide regulations.
Lake Lemon and Griffy Lake also support fishing, though they offer different boat-access rules.
