Before floating Salt Creek, know three things first: your Crimson Canoes trip begins in downtown Bloomington, the float itself is approximately three to four hours, and natural creek conditions can change the timing and water experience.
You do not need to bring your own tube or arrange a downstream car. The equipment and transportation are part of the trip.
1. Your Trip Starts in Downtown Bloomington
Do not drive around looking for a Salt Creek launch.
Crimson Canoes guests meet at People’s Park on Kirkwood Avenue in downtown Bloomington, near Indiana University’s Sample Gates.
That gives the group one central meeting point instead of asking everyone to find a creek access on their own.
Crimson Canoes is independently operated and is not owned, sponsored, endorsed or operated by Indiana University.
2. Transportation Is Part of the Experience
From People’s Park, guests board the Crimson Bus.
The ride to Salt Creek takes approximately 20–25 minutes.
This matters because tubing is naturally a point-to-point activity. You finish downstream from where the float begins.
Without organized transportation, a group usually has to solve the shuttle problem itself. With Crimson Canoes, the outbound and return transportation are built into the outing.
3. Expect About 3–4 Hours on the Creek
The three-to-four-hour estimate is physical float time, not the entire time from arriving downtown until you return.
Add the outbound ride, getting ready at the creek and the approximately 35-minute ride back to Bloomington.
Actual float duration can change with conditions, so avoid scheduling the rest of your day around an exact return minute.
4. Water Conditions Matter
Salt Creek is natural moving water, not a controlled lazy-river ride at a water park.
Crimson Canoes plans trips around conditions appropriate for easy recreational floating and generally targets current below approximately 2 mph.
That does not mean the creek is always below 2 mph.
Rainfall, changing levels and other conditions can change the speed and character of the water. The company operates based on suitable conditions rather than assuming every scheduled date will look exactly like the last one.
If conditions are not appropriate, follow the current information provided for your trip. This article does not invent a specific cancellation or rescheduling policy.
5. Your Tube and Life Jacket Are Provided
You do not need to arrive with a tube tied to the roof of your car.
Crimson Canoes provides:
- Inflatable tube
- Life jacket
- Transportation to Salt Creek
- Transportation back downtown
Tube options include lounging tubes and classic inner tubes.
That makes the preparation more about what you personally need for several hours outside than about buying water equipment.
6. Wear Water-Friendly Clothes and Shoes
Assume your entire tubing outfit can get wet.
A swimsuit or quick-drying outfit works better than heavy clothing that takes hours to dry.
Secure water shoes are a practical choice because creek access areas and natural bottoms can include wet, uneven surfaces.
Loose flip-flops can be easy to lose.
Read What to Wear on a River Tubing Trip before choosing your outfit.
7. Bring Enough for a Few Hours Outside
You do not need expedition gear, but you should be prepared for several hours of sun and water.
Bring:
- Drinking water
- Sunscreen
- Secure footwear
- Waterproof phone protection
- Sunglasses with a retainer
- Simple snacks
- Towel for afterward
- Dry clothes

8. Food and Drinks Are Allowed
Guests may bring food and drinks on a Crimson Canoes trip.
Keep them contained rather than balancing a collection of loose cans and wrappers around the tubes.
Anything brought onto Salt Creek should come back out afterward.
If alcohol is brought, anyone drinking must be of legal drinking age and follow all applicable laws.
Bring drinking water regardless of what else is in the cooler.
9. Music Is Fine
If your group wants music, you can bring an appropriate speaker or rent a JBL speaker from Crimson Canoes
Remember that you are still sharing an outdoor environment with other people and wildlife. Keep the volume reasonable rather than trying to turn the entire creek into your group’s sound system.
10. Don’t Assume Creek Conditions Are Always the Same
A video from last Saturday does not prove what Salt Creek will look like on your trip.
Current changes. Depth changes. The pace of a float changes.
Much of the Crimson Canoes route may generally be around standing depth or shallower, but that is not an exact description of every foot of creek or every operating day.
Deeper water can occur, and natural waterways should not be treated as uniform.
The company’s general under-2-mph target is also not a permanent property of Salt Creek.
11. Follow Crew Instructions
Once you arrive, use the trip instructions you are given rather than assuming advice from another river, another outfitter or an old social-media video applies.
Water conditions and access logistics can change.
If the crew directs the group to do something differently from what you expected, current trip-day conditions are more relevant than an evergreen article.
12. Plan for the Ride Back Downtown
After several hours floating, the trip is not over the second you leave the water.
Transportation back to downtown Bloomington takes approximately 35 minutes.
This is when your dry clothes and towel become useful. Keeping them separate from your creek gear makes the return much more comfortable.
Do Not Try to Find Your Own Version of the Route
Salt Creek access should not be improvised from a map.
Do not assume every bridge, road crossing, creek bank or visible opening is a legal public access point. Some surrounding land can be private.
Crimson Canoes customers should use the company’s trip logistics rather than attempting to recreate the access plan independently.
